Take the time to reflect, for intense focus and to be ever present. Meditation is a time to also let the mind drift and lose focus to give your mind the rest and energy it needs. – Daniel Barnes

Meditation is one of the most useful activities that you can undertake each day. Whether it be some simple breathing, a fully fledge guided meditation or your own unguided session – it is going to pay dividends in the long run.

Implementing daily meditation can improve your life, it can alter the way your mind operates and this opens up new possibilities and interests. Yet, I am amazed more people do not do it or have some notion of a Buddhist monk chanting to themselves, cross legged in a temple at a top of the mountain. This is simply a poor portrayal that is so far from the truth. Let us go over what mediation is, why meditate and some quick fire benefits of meditating daily.

What is Meditation?

We will start with the assumption that you are unaware of what meditation is. I will give my take on it which is likely to differ to some degree from other definitions.

Meditation is the physical act of breathing whilst undertaking mental acts of focus, visualisation and reflection. – Daniel Barnes

We are going to break this down so you can a fuller understanding of what Meditation is. After all, we do not want those misconceptions of what meditation is creeping in now.

The act of breathing is simple. It means inhaling through the nose and exhaling through the mouth. This can be a controlled breathing pattern or your body’s natural rhythm. This has a lot of versatility. If you want a focused session then counting the breath or focusing on the breath is going to produce some great results. Equally, when you want the mind to wander and go off on a travel of its own, then letting the breath return to its natural rhythm is a great way of encouraging this.

Focus means what it says on the tin – you focus on the activity and think of why you are meditating and what outcome you want from it. Doing this makes the meditation purposeful, gives you energy and once you are clear on why you are doing it each day, then you will see the results. Do not rush this part, it might take weeks, months or years. This is also likely to change over time so acknowledge the change and continue on with it.

This is what most people would normally consider to be visualisation, as you are imagining or visualising a desire, outcome or reason in your mind. However, it does differ as you will see below.

Reflection could be noting the way the body feels, what emotions are present or what has happened in your day, regardless of whether it is positive or negative. This allows you to move on from these feelings or to take action to remedy them.

Visualisation is a technique to see an object, a source of light or a place to help create the feeling of spaciousness. This can help make the mind feel free and much larger in a day and age where our minds are being crushed by information everywhere we look. It is also great for creativity as you cannot be creative if the mind is being squashed by other feelings and worries.

Why Meditate though?

With so many different streams of thought and information going through our brain. It is no wonder we can feel tired, burnt out, stressed and anxious.

Daily meditation can ease this, even prevent it – Daniel Barnes

Say each morning you took just 3 minutes or even just a single minute. Say you took this time for some controlled breathing. I guarentee you would feel better for it.

Say you added some reflection at thia point. You could sense the mood of your mind or even how your body is physically feeling. If you are feeling sad then that is great. You now have self awareness and can move on from it. You could even change up part of your day to do or find something that might make you feel happier.

Imagine then stating that you were meditating in order to have a clearer mind to be more productive at work, to write that assignment or to be a better partner.

These messages help you focus on the activity of meditation, allow you do bring some reality to the exercise as will open your mind to new ideas and thoughts. This can then help you in your relationship or help you to be more productive.
